Maneater or Starter Wife by Gigi Levangie Grazer
These two novels are raw, direct and forever entertaining, even if outdated.
The antics of Grazer’s self-deprecating, witty heroine in Starter Wife and her oddball collection of best friends had me falling out of my hammock in peals of laughter.
Mymost memorable flip out of the hammock occurred when our dear jilted heroine falls in love with a homeless beach bum. The reaction of her rich and gay best friends is a scene to die for
I avoided both these books for a long time thinking they looked insipid. That was me judging a book by its cover. How wrong I was. I read Something Borrowed because I had nothing else to read on a long plane ride and then immediately after I landed I went out and bought Something Blue.
The subject matter of a superficial young woman, Darcy, who has it all and wants even more without a care for others, could have been easily another clichéd novel of young, self-destructive woman in big city. However, Giffin’s writing is so clean cut and unabashedly honest that I quickly fell into the trance of the characters’ lives, which after all, is what a good book does-carry you to another place

Weighty Matters
That Camden Summer by LaVyrle Spencer
Spunky main character, Roberta Jewett, arrives in Camden, Maine in 1916, as a divorcee with three children and shakes up the traditional town when she buys a Model T Ford and traipses around the countryside seeking only the happiness of herself and her girls. A tragic, real-life, gritty sub plot reveals the truth behind the small town’s idealized self-deception. The story was inspired by an article on poet Edna St. Vincent Millay.
Indeed, Millay’s mother Cora had divorced her father in 1904 and eventually settled in Camden, Maine with her three daughters, which is where Edna St. Vincent Millay wrote her first poems. This book features beautiful descriptions of the village and countryside, a blossoming mature romance and child-rearing at its best
Something Borrowed and Something Blue byEmilyGiffin
Lucy by Jamaica Kincaid
Lucy is a West Indian girl who travels to New York City to live as an au pair for a family who seems to have everything: beauty, riches, and happiness. But Lucy sees behind the appearances, and for her, the world is an oyster opening to reveal the damaged pearl within.
Wounded indelibly by her mother’s failure to love Lucy for herself and to recognize Lucy’s innate gifts, Lucy, says, “If I did not know everything yet, I would not be afraid to know everything as it came up. That life might be cold and hard would not surprise me.” An elegantly-written, uncompromising portrayal of a young woman entering the portal of her own life

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
This bestseller is everywhere and for that I am glad. Ms. Gilbert’s travels through three distinct countries, Italy, India and Indonesia, as well as her inward journey through love, depression, longing, betrayal and finally love again, reveal for all of us, what life can and should be: not a search but a journey, not just longing, but believing and accepting. No other book I have read recently has touched so many different souls. I have read it twice in six months. And did I mention, it is very funny, too

The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine
Kendall bought this book and gave it to me. I devoured the easy to comprehend scientific explanations for why I am unpredictable, hormonal, flighty, insecure, growing, stubborn, unflinching and hotheaded. Hmmm… you mean it isn’t just me, sweetheart-it’s all of us wonderful females? Well, frankly, this book is enlightening and gave me great comfort. It is like the saying, “what you don’t understand, you fear.” Well, now I understand why I go through all of these incredible mood swings and I feel so much better. I, happily, do not fear the onset of my PMS anymore, although I can’t speak for Kendall
