Lodging

Unlike some of those exclusive small islands that cater for the rich and tanned, you can enjoy Carriacou for less than $75.00 a day, including lodging and food.   For instance, the following hotels offer rooms at cut- rate prices.

Ade’s Dream - www.adesdream.com - economy rooms with basic amenities are $32 - $38 U.S. per night.  Studios with kitchenettes, a/c, and TV are $50 - 60 U.S. per night.   Ade’s Dream is centrally located.  So, if you like to be within walking distance of EVERYTHING -- banks, restaurants, numerous rum shops, pharmacies, and grocery stores -- then this place is right for you.  It is located right on Main Street in Hillsborough, a mere 5 minute walk to the ferry dock.  It is a wireless location, so feel free to connect to the Internet here.

John’s Unique Resort - contact (473) 443-8346 (phone) or (473) 443-8348 (fax); johnresort@grenadines.net or junique@spiceisle.com.  This hotel is also on Main Street in Hillsborough, but around the curve of the beach in a secluded, quiet spot.  It offers 17 apartments and rooms with balconies, cable, a/c and a wonderful little restaurant on the premises that serves the best local lunch in town.  Room rates are as low as $25 - 55 U.S. per day.   The restaurant is in a shady courtyard where you can relax as ground lizards skate about on the palm trees and the trellis of island flowers like pink and purple bougainvillea and yellow allamanda flutter in the breeze.

Other choices for accommodation include personal cottages such as the Bogles Round House, www.boglesroundhouse.com, or Bayleau Point Cottages, www.carriacoucottages.com.  These personal cottages are about $80 - $120 per night depending on the size.  In addition, the Green Roof Inn, www.greenroofinn.com, located on a small hill right outside of town, offers single or double rooms with lovely views of Hillsborough.  For a private villa, try Down Island Ltd., www.islandvillas.com.  They offer a wide selection of accommodations starting at $60 U.S. a day.

Restaurants

There are limited restaurant options on Carriacou.  However, what is here is very good!

First of all, the absolute best restaurant in the Grenadine island chain is located right at the Bogles Round House.  This is Lynn’s humble opinion but she has eaten in all of the top-notch restaurants in the Grenadines, including Basil’s in Mustique, which does not come close to the dining at Bogles Round House.   Roxanne, the chef, has won numerous awards for her culinary delights.  This will be a memorable dining experience, so do not miss it.  With linen tablecloths, efficient, and personal friendly service by Phil, and fantastic food, you will want to return here more than once during your stay. Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  Make a reservation -- (473) 443 - 7841

Also, check out the Green Roof Inn, where chef, Lesley Anne’s specials and Susan, the server, provide another excellent fine dining experience with the best sunset views.  Come early for a glass of wine to enjoy the setting sun and the green flash.  Reservations at (473) 443 - 6399.

For delicious island fare, try Cow Foot Food & Bar in Bellevue.  The owner/chef, Theresa, will make you feel right at home in this casual, homey restaurant where you can sit on stools at a wooden table on the patio and dig into rotis, naan bread  and channa, and barbeque ribs and chips.  Theresa was born in the islands but lived in England for many years so her food has real island flavor with a worldly influence. (473) 443-8766.

Then, there is pizza.  The Lazy Turtle, www.lazy-turtle.com in Tyrell Bay never disappoints with its fine selection of thin crust pizzas including a callalloo and egg pizza.   J.B. the Frenchman owner/chef offers consistently good pizza, smooth drinks, and a great seaside location where you can sit with your feet up on the wooden railing overlooking the beach and enjoy the sunset, and the comings and goings of the many yachts moored in Tyrell Bay.  (473) 443 - 8322.

Lunch in town: try John’s Unique Resort.  The local lunch is $15 E.C. or about $ 5.50 U.S.  for a big plate of rice, provisions, chicken or fish or pork, and callaloo.  Simple, good and filling.  Enjoy the lovely courtyard too.
