Who doesn’t love a hot deal, a special, a chance to explore and experience the Caribbean at an amazing discounted price? Kendall and I are always on the lookout for spicy offerings for our trips through the
Caribbean. Here are some we have tried
Auctions
Recently, Kendall and I became addicted to www.skyauction.com. You get to bid on hotels, flights, and packages to luxurious resorts. We recently won a bid of $15 U.S. a night at the fabulous Flamboyant Hotel on Grand Anse Beach in Grenada. An added tax of $32.00 per night brings our grand total to $47.00 a night and we can choose to stay up to seven nights. Nightly rates at that hotel start at $130 U.S. per night. Better yet, you can use your win anytime within one year. So, basically, we purchase these cheapie getaways and just horde them up for whenever we need to hightail it out of Carriacou and experience something different. Try it, they offer more than just Caribbean specials.
Dominican Republic
Another great deal is the Local Hotels of the Dominican Republic's North Coast.
Those wanting to go to the Dominican Republic, especially Cabarete on the North Coast for awesome adventures, like kiteboarding, surfing (yes, even in June), mountain biking and hiking, should try local hotels like www.hotelkaoba.com. Most vacation packages to the D.R. offer only the all-inclusive deals to the big name, touristy resorts where you can easily get lost in the line at the buffet tale. But for some real traveler’s specials, check out www.hispaniola.com and call the smaller, local hotels directly. By booking them yourself, you can find great rooms at unbelievable prices, especially considering the exchange rate is $1 U.S to $33 pesos.
Lynn’s all time favorite Cabarete hotel is the Kaoba Hotel, www.hotelkaoba.com , which is right across the street from some wicked bars and restaurants, including her all-time fave bakery, which serves up hot, flaky croissants in the morning for a few pesos. The room rates for a basic studio at the Kaoba is $45 - 50 U.S. a night and for a deluxe studio or a grand studio, you pay a little bit more, about $ 55 - $60 per night. You get two double beds, air conditioning and ceiling fans, a view of the lovely pool area, and a kitchenette so you can stock up on your own drinks, and stash away some late-night munchies. This is a must for Lynn, who is somehow afraid of being stranded without any food or water. There are several local restaurants nearby, one is just a three minute walk on the same side of the street as the Kaoba hotel. You can delight in tostones, fried fish, green salad and a cold Presidente beer for about $10 U.S. And you can converse with the friendly Dominicans, practice your Spanish and enjoy the real life world of the Spanish Caribbean.
